What is a Tax Residency Certificate apostille?

A Tax Residency Certificate (also called a Certificate of Residence) is issued by HMRC and confirms you are a UK tax resident. It is commonly needed to claim double-taxation relief under a tax treaty, open accounts or operate companies abroad, prove your tax status to foreign suppliers or clients, and satisfy overseas regulators.

An apostille is an official certificate added by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirming your document is genuine, so it can be accepted in any country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Originals vs scans — which route applies to you?

HMRC issues Tax Residency Certificates in two formats and the apostille route depends on which one you have:

  • Original wet-ink HMRC certificate — we can apostille it directly. No solicitor certification, no £20 fee.
  • Scan or copy only (PDF, printout, email attachment) — the FCDO will not apostille a copy. It must first be certified by a UK solicitor, which adds a £20 solicitor-certification fee.

Next Day Apostille Services

  • Send us your HMRC Tax Residency Certificate (original wet-ink, or scan if that’s all you have).
  • If it’s a scan/copy we arrange solicitor certification first. If it’s the original we go straight to the FCDO.
  • We submit your document to the FCDO for the apostille.
  • Your apostilled certificate is returned to you, ready to use abroad.

Who needs a Tax Residency Certificate apostille?

  • UK individuals and businesses claiming double-taxation relief under a treaty (e.g. Spain, Italy, France, UAE, Germany, India and many more).
  • Companies opening bank accounts, subsidiaries or branches overseas.
  • Freelancers and contractors invoicing foreign clients who must withhold tax unless UK residency is proven.
  • Anyone whose overseas accountant, bank or tax authority has asked for an apostilled Certificate of Residence.

Good to know

Most countries accept the apostilled certificate directly. Some destinations also require a certified translation alongside the apostille — we can arrange that too. HMRC certificates are usually accepted abroad if dated within the last 6–12 months, so check the issue date and the timing your foreign counterparty needs. If you only have a scan/PDF from HMRC, that’s fine — we’ll arrange solicitor certification before the apostille.

Q: How long does it take?
A: Standard service is 3–5 working days. For documents received before 10am, our next-day service returns it the next working day. Add 1 working day if solicitor certification is required.

Q: Do I also need a translation?
A: Some countries require a certified translation alongside the apostille. We can arrange this — just let us know your destination.

Q: Will it be accepted in my destination country?
A: An apostille is recognised by all member countries of the Hague Apostille Convention. If your destination requires full embassy legalisation instead, we can arrange that too.

Q: Can you help me obtain the certificate from HMRC?
