Important change from 11 September 2026. Vietnam has joined the Hague Apostille Convention. UK public documents — birth, marriage and death certificates, ACRO and DBS certificates, degrees, powers of attorney, company documents and more — now need only an FCDO apostille to be accepted in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Embassy in London has stopped legalising these documents, so the old embassy stage is no longer required, and the whole process is faster and cheaper than before.
Two things haven’t changed: most Vietnamese authorities still require a Vietnamese translation, and a small group of commercial and customs documents remains outside the Convention and still needs embassy legalisation. Both are covered below.
Documents legalised by the embassy before 11 September 2026 remain valid — there’s no need to redo them.
Working in Vietnam — degree certificates, transcripts and TEFL/TESOL certificates for work permits, and an ACRO police certificate. Teachers, in particular, need all three for the Department of Labour work-permit application.
Marriage to a Vietnamese citizen — certificate of no impediment or affidavit of single status, birth certificate, and decree absolute or previous spouse’s death certificate where applicable, for the Vietnamese registry office.
Business — certificates of incorporation, articles, certificates of good standing, board resolutions and powers of attorney for setting up a company, opening a bank account or appointing a representative in Vietnam.
Family and residency — marriage and birth certificates for dependant visas, temporary residence cards and school enrolment.
Adoption, inheritance and property — court orders, wills, grants of probate and powers of attorney.

Vietnamese law requires that a document not in Vietnamese be accompanied by a Vietnamese translation, notarised or certified in accordance with Vietnamese regulations. Depending on the receiving authority, this can be done in Vietnam after the document arrives, or arranged by us here and sent with the apostilled original. We provide Vietnamese translations — send us a scan of your document and tell us which authority will receive it, and we’ll confirm the cost and the right route.

No — not for public documents. Since 11 September 2026 Vietnam accepts the UK apostille on its own. The embassy only legalises commercial and customs documents that fall outside the Apostille Convention.
Vietnam joined the Hague Apostille Convention. From that date the Vietnamese Embassy in London stopped accepting UK public documents for consular legalisation, because the FCDO apostille is now recognised directly in Vietnam.
Yes. Documents legalised through the embassy before 11 September 2026 remain valid in Vietnam, and apostilles issued before that date are also accepted. There’s no need to repeat the process.
Standard apostille is 3 to 5 working days; next day is available for documents received by 10:30am. Before September 2026 the embassy stage alone took a week or more, so the whole process is now much quicker.
£59 per document standard or £79 next day, plus £20 where solicitor certification is needed — the same as our apostille service for any Hague country. Commercial and customs documents that still need the embassy are £190 per document including certification, apostille and legalisation.
For most uses, yes. Vietnamese law requires a notarised or certified Vietnamese translation of any document not in Vietnamese. We can arrange this, or it can be done in Vietnam after the document arrives — tell us which authority will receive it and we’ll advise.
Administrative documents directly related to commercial or customs activity — certificates of origin, commercial invoices, packing lists, customs declarations. Ordinary company documents such as certificates of incorporation, articles and board resolutions are covered by the apostille.
For birth, marriage, death and divorce certificates and ACRO or DBS certificates, yes — the FCDO apostilles the original. Degree certificates and most other documents can be done from a solicitor-certified copy, so you keep the original.
Typically your degree certificate, your TEFL or teaching certificate and an ACRO police certificate, each apostilled, plus Vietnamese translations for the work-permit application. The police certificate should be issued within the last 6 months.
