What is Malaysia document legalisation?

Because Malaysia isn’t a member of the Apostille Convention, a UK apostille alone isn’t enough. Your document is first apostilled by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), then legalised by the High Commission of Malaysia in London. With both, Malaysian authorities, employers and courts will accept it.

The FCDO and the High Commission issue the stamps. We manage every stage for you and check each document first, so it isn’t refused.

Notary, not solicitor. For Malaysia, copies of documents and documents you sign yourself must be notarised by a UK notary public before the FCDO apostille. A solicitor’s certification isn’t accepted. We arrange the notary for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does Malaysia accept the UK apostille on its own?
No. Malaysia isn’t a member of the Apostille Convention, so after the FCDO apostille the document must also be legalised by the High Commission of Malaysia in London.
How much does Malaysia legalisation cost?
£150 per document for the full package: the FCDO apostille and High Commission legalisation, with all fees included. Degrees, copies and signed documents also need a notary, from £120 depending on the document. If your document is already apostilled, the High Commission stage alone is £85.
How long does it take?
7 to 9 working days for the full service, from when we receive your documents.
Why do I need a notary and not a solicitor?
The High Commission of Malaysia asks for copies and signed documents to be notarised by a UK notary public before the FCDO apostille. A solicitor’s certification isn’t accepted.
Can my degree be legalised for Malaysia?
Yes. A notary certifies a copy of your degree, so you keep the original, then the FCDO apostilles it and the High Commission legalises it.
Do I need a translation?
Documents not in English or Malay need an English translation, which is notarised with the copy. UK documents in English don’t need translating for the legalisation.
Can a power of attorney be signed by video call?
Our notary can witness by video call for many documents. Some Malaysian authorities want in-person signing, so we check before booking.
Can you send the documents to Malaysia?
Yes. Choose DHL International (£40) and we’ll courier the legalised documents to an address in Malaysia.
