What is a statutory declaration?

A statutory declaration is a written statement of facts that you formally declare to be true in front of an authorised witness. Making a false declaration is a criminal offence, which is why authorities in the UK and abroad accept it as evidence.

For use in the UK, a solicitor can usually witness it. For use abroad, foreign authorities generally want it witnessed by a notary public and then apostilled, because a notary’s signature is recognised internationally.

Declares that an original has been lost when a replacement isn’t available.

Identity and residence

Confirms who you are or where you live, for banks, property or registration abroad.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a notarised statutory declaration cost?
From £120 per document for the notary to witness it. If it’s going abroad, the FCDO apostille is £59 (standard) or £79 (next day), so most people pay from £179 in total.
Can a statutory declaration be witnessed by video call?
Yes, our notary can witness it by video call. Some authorities only accept in-person witnessing, so we check what the receiving authority accepts before you book.
Do I need a notary or will a solicitor do?
For use in the UK, a solicitor is usually fine. For use abroad, most authorities want a notary public, whose signature can then be apostilled and recognised internationally.
Can you write the declaration for me?
Send us what the authority has asked for and we’ll advise on the format and wording before your appointment.
What do I need to bring?
Your valid passport and the unsigned declaration. Don’t sign it beforehand; it must be signed in front of the notary.
Does a statutory declaration need an apostille?
For most countries abroad, yes. Countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt and Thailand also need embassy legalisation after the apostille. We arrange both.
What is a single status declaration?
A statutory declaration confirming you’re not married. It’s often required for marriage abroad and for some family visas, sometimes together with a Certificate of No Impediment.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Contact us with your preferred date. Once it’s witnessed, the apostille takes 3–5 working days, or the next working day with our £79 service.
