Moving to Spain, marrying there, enrolling at a Spanish university or buying property? Spain accepts the UK apostille — but here’s the part that surprises people: for most official procedures, the apostille alone isn’t the finish line. Spanish authorities will usually also insist on a sworn translation of your document into Spanish, produced to their official standard. An everyday certified translation gets rejected. We handle both halves — the apostille and the sworn translation — in one order, so your documents are accepted in Spain first time.

Please keep in mind that we don’t issue apostilles ourselves. We specialise in guiding your documents through the correct official channels quickly and accurately, so you avoid the rejections and delays that catch most people out.

What Spain actually requires

Spain belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention, so no embassy stage is needed — the FCDO apostille is the only legalisation your UK document requires. The extra requirement is linguistic, not consular: a translation prepared by a sworn translator officially authorised by the Spanish state (a traducción jurada), stamped and signed so Spanish registries, universities and courts will accept it. If you submit an apostilled document with an ordinary translation — or no translation — most Spanish offices will simply hand it back.

How it works

  1. Send us your documents (or a scan, where a certified copy is acceptable for the document type).
  2. Where the document type needs it, we arrange solicitor certification (£20 per document) before the apostille.
  3. We obtain the FCDO apostille — £59 standard (3–5 working days) or £79 next-day.
  4. Our sworn translator produces the official Spanish translation of the apostilled document, from £80 per page.
  5. Everything is returned to you together, ready to use in Spain.

We handle the entire process and keep you updated at every step.

Apostille from £59 · Sworn translation from £80 per page

  • Solicitor certification (only where the document type requires it): £20 per document
  • Standard apostille (3–5 working days): £59 per document
  • Next-day apostille (next working day, received before 10am): £79 per document
  • Sworn Spanish translation: from £80 per page (1–2 working days per document, after the apostille)

Example: a birth certificate, apostilled next-day and sworn-translated, is £79 + £80 = £159. Order the apostille through the form on this page, and mention the translation in your order notes or contact us — we’ll quote the exact translation cost based on your document’s length.

Documents we regularly prepare for Spain

  • Birth and marriage certificates — for marriage, residency and family registration in Spain.
  • Certificates of No Impediment — for marrying in Spain.
  • ACRO police certificates — for visa and residency applications.
  • Degree certificates and transcripts — for university enrolment and recognition of UK qualifications.
  • Powers of attorney and notarised documents — for Spanish property purchases and legal matters.
  • Company documents — for doing business or setting up in Spain.

Taking a UK degree to Spain?

If your goal is official recognition of your qualification — for a regulated profession or formal equivalence of your degree level — Spain runs its own recognition procedures through its Ministry of Universities, and the application is made in Spain by you or your representative. What we do is make sure the UK side of your bundle is complete and correct: the apostilled degree and transcript plus their sworn translations, prepared to the standard the Spanish ministry expects. Tell us it’s for degree recognition when you order and we’ll prepare the set accordingly.

Good to know

The sworn translation is produced from the apostilled document — the apostille certificate itself gets translated too, which is exactly what Spanish authorities expect to see. So the right order is always apostille first, translation second; sending a document for translation before it’s apostilled means paying twice. If you need several documents, add them all to one order — we apostille and translate them as a set, which is faster and cheaper than one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does Spain need embassy legalisation?
A: No. Spain is a Hague Convention country, so the FCDO apostille is the only legalisation required — no embassy stage.

Q: Will any translation do?
A: No — that’s the most common mistake. Spanish authorities require a sworn translation produced by an officially authorised sworn translator, stamped and signed. We arrange this from £80 per page.

Q: Which comes first, the apostille or the translation?
A: Always the apostille. The sworn translation is then made of the apostilled document, including the apostille certificate itself.

Q: How long does the whole process take?
A: Apostille in 3–5 working days (or next-day), then the sworn translation typically adds 1–2 working days per document.

Q: Can you help with Spanish degree recognition?
A: We prepare the complete UK document bundle — apostilled degree and transcript with sworn translations. The recognition application itself is then submitted in Spain by you or your representative.
