What is an ACRO Police Certificate apostille?

An ACRO Police Certificate is issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office and confirms your criminal record status. It is one of the most commonly requested documents for visa, immigration and emigration applications around the world.

An apostille is an official certificate added by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirming your document is genuine, so it can be recognised in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. Acceptance is always up to the receiving authority.

Don’t have your ACRO certificate yet? We can apply for it for you

If you haven’t yet obtained your ACRO Police Certificate, you don’t need to apply separately and then come back to us. We can submit the ACRO application on your behalf, then apostille the certificate once it’s issued — so the whole process is handled in one place. Get in touch and we’ll talk you through the options, timescales and costs for your situation.

How it works

  • Send your original ACRO Police Certificate to our team so we can check it meets the requirements.
  • We submit your document to the FCDO for the apostille.
  • Your apostilled certificate is returned to you, ready to use abroad.

We handle the entire process and keep you updated at every step.

Pricing

  • Standard apostille (3–5 working days): £59 per document
  • Next-day apostille (next working day, received before 10:30am): £79 per document

Who needs an ACRO Police Certificate apostille?

  • Applying for a work visa, residence permit or emigration (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA or the Gulf).
  • Registering with a professional body overseas.
  • Asked by a foreign employer or immigration authority to prove your criminal record status.

Good to know

Please send the original certificate. Many countries will only accept an ACRO certificate issued recently — often within the last three to six months — so check the date before you start. Make sure you have the ACRO Police Certificate (the one used for immigration), not a basic disclosure. If you’re unsure, send it to us and we’ll advise.

Which countries ask for an apostilled ACRO certificate?

ACRO certificates are mostly needed for work visas, residency and emigration.

CountryCommon reasonsWhat you need
SpainResidence permits and work visasApostilled ACRO certificate plus a sworn Spanish translation (Spain document legalisation)
ItalyResidence permits and workApostilled ACRO certificate; an Italian translation is often required
Saudi ArabiaWork and family residency visasApostille only – no embassy legalisation (Saudi work visa)

Frequently asked questions

Can you apply for the ACRO certificate for me?
Yes. If you don’t have your ACRO certificate yet, we can apply on your behalf and then arrange the apostille once it’s issued. Contact us for details.
Can I send you the ACRO certificate directly from ACRO?
Yes. Enter our office address as the delivery address on your ACRO application and we’ll start as soon as it arrives.
Do I need to send the original?
Yes, please send the original ACRO Police Certificate.
Does an ACRO certificate need certifying before apostille?
No. ACRO certificates are signed by ACRO and the FCDO accepts them directly, so no solicitor certification is needed.
How long does it take?
Standard service is 3–5 working days. For documents received before 10:30am, our next-day service returns it the next working day.
How long is an ACRO certificate valid for once apostilled?
The apostille doesn’t expire, but many visa authorities want the certificate to be less than 6 months old when you apply. Check your destination’s rule before you start.
Which countries ask for an apostilled ACRO certificate?
Commonly the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Spain and Italy for work visas and residency, and some authorities in Australia and the USA. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait also need embassy legalisation after the apostille; Saudi Arabia needs the apostille only.
Will it be accepted in my destination country?
An apostille is recognised in Apostille Convention countries, but acceptance is up to the receiving authority. Some countries, such as the UAE, Qatar and Thailand, also need embassy legalisation after the apostille – we can arrange that too.
What if my ACRO certificate says "no trace"?
That’s fine – "no trace" simply means no record was found. It’s apostilled in exactly the same way.
Can I use a DBS certificate instead?
Usually not for visas. Immigration authorities normally ask for an ACRO Police Certificate, while a DBS certificate is mainly for employment checks.
